Welcome to the first issue of Perspectives for the newly minted Special Interest Group 18, Telepractice! SIG 18 was approved by the ASHA Board of Directors on October 16, 2011. With such short lead time, it is a significant achievement that Lyn Tindall, Perspectives Editor and Editorial Committee Chair, was able to bring this issue to fruition. Moreover, I am grateful to contributing experts Janet Brown, Pauline Mashima, Deborah Theodoros, and Valerie Watzlaf.
ASHA's newest SIG proudly “stands on the shoulders” of hundreds of ASHA members who promoted the development of telepractice over the past decade. Indeed, telepractice uniquely presents the capacity to provide speech-language and audiology services to underserved persons in a diversity of locations and settings. And so, it is no accident that SIG 18 is closely aligned with ASHA's vision “to make effective communication, a human right, accessible and achievable for all.”
